Help us feed impoverished single-parent families!
Every day, we fight to ensure that low-income single-parent families do not have to go to bed hungry. For five years now, we have been systematically helping single parents and their children get through this difficult time and regain their independence. Imagine having barely €5.50 a day to feed your children. This is the harsh reality for hundreds of families in Slovakia.
As part of the Food Aid Platform Slovakia, we rescue surplus food and deliver it to those who desperately need it. In Slovakia, up to 600,000 tonnes of food are thrown away every year, yet less than 6,000 tonnes reach people in need. We want to change that – and we cannot do it without you.
Iveta – a heart that beat for others
In our non-profit organisation, we had an exceptional colleague – Iveta. She was like a whirlwind, full of energy and determination to help single parents. When she saw families in need, she simply couldn’t stand by and do nothing.
She dreamed of expanding food aid across Slovakia. It was Iveta who discovered the funding opportunity for utility vehicles – something we desperately needed to deliver surplus food. She wrote the project, we underwent inspections, faced bureaucratic hurdles, waited a year for approval and another for the contract to be signed. But while we were fighting the paperwork, Iveta was fighting her own battle – with a cruel illness.
She never got to see her dream come true – to witness the smiles of single-parent families receiving food. It weighed heavily on her that help was coming too slowly. On 31 October 2023, she left us forever.
When we finally paid off the last vehicle on 31 December 2024 and celebrated the new branding, her absence was deeply felt. But her legacy lives on. In her honour, we named the entire fleet IVETA – each vehicle now carries a letter of her name, a quiet tribute to the woman who gave her all.
What have we achieved so far – thanks to you – and where are we headed?
Iveta secured the vehicles for us – a tool that saves both food and lives. Thanks to your generosity and the fundraising efforts, we’ve already covered the fees, insurance, and fuel for the entire year. But now, we face one final challenge – we need people to send those vehicles out on the road. We want to employ more single parents – to give them work, dignity, and the chance to provide for their families. They will drive the IVETA fleet, delivering food and humanitarian aid to places where hungry children and exhausted parents are waiting.
What are we raising funds for?
We need sufficient funds to cover the annual salaries for our team of five brave individuals – drivers and a coordinator – so the IVETA fleet can operate without interruption. We are €104,000 short of being able to pay their part-time wages for the entire year. But this money is about more than just salaries and contributions – it is about hope, about full plates, about children not going to bed with empty stomachs, and about single parents being given the chance to stand back on their feet.
Why is this so urgent?
Every day, we witness tonnes of food being thrown away, even though they could feed so many people. Iveta believed that hunger has no place in 21st-century Slovakia – and we still feel the pain that her dream remains unfinished. Every euro you contribute is a piece of the mosaic that will complete her legacy. It is a chance to show that her fight – and ours – was not in vain.
Imagine the joy of children sitting down to a full plate of food for the first time in a long while. Imagine the tears of gratitude in a mother’s eyes as she no longer has to say, “There’s nothing to eat today.” And imagine Iveta, smiling down on us from above.
