About us
…only what is lived is understood…
We are parents and individuals who either live the life of a single parent or understand the challenges these families face. That is why we decided to establish the non-profit organisation JEDEN RODIČ (ONE PARENT), as we want to bring about positive change for single parents and their children.
We are the first and only organisation dedicated to supporting families where only one parent is actively involved in raising the children. The other parent may have moved away, divorced and is no longer equally involved in the upbringing, is absent from the child’s life, or has passed away.
Our mission
Our mission is to support single-parent families.
We aim to improve the lives of single parents and their children through tangible assistance and by enhancing conditions within Slovakia’s social system and society as a whole.
We want parents and children in these families to live safe, fulfilling, dignified, and happy lives. We advocate for a society where single parents and their children are treated fairly.
Our vision
Our values
Perseverance
We value the efforts of single parents who raise their children on their own.
Trustworthiness
Single-parent families can rely on us. We provide expert, relevant, and systematic counselling based on evidence.
Education
We offer the knowledge and skills parents need to lead dignified lives.
Fairness
We advocate for fair treatment of single-parent families by both the public and private sectors.
Teamwork
We work in teams to achieve more together.
Our goals
- Shorten this challenging period so that children and parents can start anew.
- Improve and enhance the living conditions of single-parent households.
- Minimise any negative impacts on the lives and well-being of children growing up in single-parent families.
- Establish centres where single parents and their children can seek help and regularly meet.
- Launch an online platform for parents to access education, information, and downloadable forms.
- Advocate for reforms in Slovakia’s social system.
- Legally recognise the term “single parent” as a caregiver of one or more dependent children who deserves increased attention from the state and public institutions due to the heightened risk of poverty and social exclusion.

In Slovakia, suicide is the second leading cause of death among children and young people, following car accidents. According to the Commissioner for Children, this is partly due to the rise in poverty, which currently affects nearly 900,000 people in the country. The most vulnerable groups are single mothers and large families.
