Financial guide for single parents

Financial guide for single parents

According to surveys, financial literacy in Slovakia remains low, with as many as 62% of Slovaks lacking sufficient knowledge of financial planning and money management. Moreover, more than half of households have no financial reserves, increasing their vulnerability in the face of unexpected expenses. This project is therefore a crucial step towards improving the financial stability and knowledge of single parents, contributing to a better quality of life for their families.

With the support of the Slovak National Bank Foundation, a grant of €5,000 has been allocated to create the Financial Guide for Single Parents, which will provide single parents with practical advice and tools for effectively managing their family finances.

The project’s goal is to help single parents develop the habit of regularly engaging in financial planning and tracking their income and expenses. The guide will include worksheets, shopping lists, and recommendations for building savings. It will be tested by ten clients over three months.

The outcomes will also include video tutorials available online to facilitate the education of parents in financial management and advisory skills.

An economic advisor dedicated 150 intensive hours of individual counselling to 10 single parents, guiding them in detail through the use of the Guide. During these sessions, she addressed not only the theoretical sections but also practical issues and challenges parents face in their daily lives. The final version of the Guide was then prepared after carefully incorporating valuable feedback and suggestions that arose directly from the parents’ experiences. This approach ensured that the Guide is truly practical, useful, and fully tailored to the needs of families.
